Carved and Painted Wooden Book-form Slide-lid Box, probably New England, early 19th century, carved from a single piece of wood, the exterior painted black over earlier red, with gilt edges, 6 7/8 x 3 3/4 in.

any cracks, the edges and corners have paint loss, and there's a couple of small paint losses on the bottom. The box is painted black over earlier red and the paint has craquelure with the red showing through.the black.
