N.B. The Warlpiri Aborigine inhabit the central-western desert area of Australia's Northern Territory and were traditionally semi-nomadic. As foragers in an arid climate, such food sources as the bush-banana plant held great mythic importance as well as nourishment. Warlpiri paintings frequently incorporate these plants into a unique vision of their physical landscape, which they believe is the result and embodiment of ancestral spirits.
