Standing on that miserable eminence/An Illustration for The Scarlet Letter
Signed and dated "Eric Pape/1900" l.r., estate stamped on the frame backing paper.
Watercolor on paper, sight size 34 x 23 3/4 in. (86.2 x 60.0 cm), framed.
Condition: Scattered abrasions, small crease to u.r. corner, not examined out of frame.

N.B. The painting at hand was reproduced as an illustration for The Scarlet Letter, published in 1900 by Houghton, Mifflin and Company as part of a multi-volume set of The Writings of Nathaniel Hawthorne. The illustration appears facing page 80 (Vol. 6). The lot is accompanied by a photocopy of the book's title page and of the illustration.
