Robert Motherwell (American, 1915-1991)

Capriccio, 1961, edition of 200 plus proofs published by Berggruen & Cie, Paris (Terenzio & Belknap, App.1). Signed "Robert Motherwell" in pencil l.r., numbered "33/200" in pencil l.l., initialed within the matrix. Color collotype with pochoir coloring on Arches paper, image size 20 3/8 x 15 3/4 in. (51.5 x 40.0 cm), unmatted, unframed.
Condition: Margins 2 inches or more with two deckled edges, old hinges at upper corners, minor handling creases to sheet.

Estimate $800-1,200

Out of its frame the sheet measures 25 1/2 x 19 5/8 in. with deckled right and lower edges. The sheet is gently lightstruck and is gently cockled. There are soft handling creases (visible primarily in the lower margin and on the reverse). There is soiling to the verso.
