Canvas with a coarse weave. Surface irregularity along bottom edge, 3 inches up from the bottom, running fully across the composition, consisting of dimples or puckers in a regular rhythm that would suggest possible stitching. Another surface irregularity in the l.l. corner where there is an area of canvas that shows a weave finer that the surrounding areas. An old repair or tear measuring 3 inches located in the center, running from the edge of the Madonna's right hand over to the the tops of the fingers of her left hand and corresponding to a patch reinforcement on the reverse.
