Equestrian Portrait of Louis Philippe, King of the French, 1830
Unsigned, inscribed "Samuel Powel" on the reverse.
Oil on canvas, 25 1/2 x 21 1/4 in. (64.8 x 54.0 cm),framed.
Condition: Retouch, patch reinforcements, craquelure, minor surface grime.
Provenance: Samuel Hare Powel (1818-1885) of Powelton, Philadelphia, and 25 Bowery Street, Newport, Rhode Island; by descent to his son John Hare Powel Jr. (1837-1890),by descent to his son Pemberton Hare Powel (1869-?); by descent to his daughter Annie Hare Powel Brayton (1891-?); estate of Elinor Truesdale Marvell, Cliff Farm, Tiverton, Rhode Island.

N.B. Samuel Hare Powel was an attaché at the French and English courts, c. 1840-1842, and later a Rhode Island state senator from 1870 to 1876.

Restoration by H.R. Finn, Finn Gallery, Portsmouth, Rhode Island, 2003. Six patch reinforcements to the reverse. Retouch primarily to u.l. quadrant. Largest area of retouch is in the u.l. quadrant, measuring approx. 3 1/2 x 8 in. at extreme height and width; other retouch primarily dots and dashes around the figure.
