Painting was conserved November, 1996, by Perry Hunt,
Fine Art and Mural Conservation Studio, in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and the treatment report is affixed to the frame backing.
Retouch to fill craquelure overall, with more extensive retouch as follows: 2 in. diameter circle beneath the sitter's left hand; a 2 x 3 in. area at c.r.. edge; a 5 x 6 x 6 in. triangular area at the l.l. corner; a line measuring 2-1/4 in. at the sitter's chin, right side; retouch to fill craquelure on all facial features and forehead; various dots and dashes throughout the composition. Possible skinning from earlier cleaning efforts. The 1996 treatment report states that the conservators found that the original paint was sensitive to certain solvents, and, because of this, old areas of varnish were deliberately left intact during their work.
