Portrait of the Screw Steamer Sylvester L. Ward. Signed and dated "SFM Badger '96." l.l., vessel identified on pennant and bow. Oil on canvas, 22 x 36 in., in original gilt-gesso frame. Condition: Good, two patch repairs u.r., scattered retouch, primarily to background, stable craquelure.
Note: The Sylvester L. Ward was built Boston, Massachusetts, in 1892. Its home port was Boston and was owned by Abram F. Burke. The vessel was named after Sylvester L. Ward, a partner and later president of a fertilizer and neats-foot oil manufacturing company located on Spectacle Island off Boston.
