Description:

Frits Thaulow (Norwegian, 1847-1906)

Autumn River Scene, Probably the Netherlands or Belgium
Signed "Frits Thaulow" l.l., with a label from Scott & Fowles, New York,
affixed to the stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 26 x 32 1/4 in. (66.0 x 82.0 cm),in a period frame.
Condition: Scattered small abrasions, surface grime.

Provenance: Through the collection of Collier Whittemore Baird (1888-1977),New Jersey and New York; present owner by family descent.

N.B. The work at hand has been examined via digital photographs by Thaulow scholar Vidar Poulsson. While he could not specifically pinpoint the location, he believes it to be from the north of France rather than the Netherlands or Belgium. He commented that there could be a possibility that the work was exhibited in London in 1908 at the Grafton Galleries. This was a sales exhibition on behalf of Thaulow's dealers, Georges Petit of Paris. Possibly it was number 47, "Chaumière à Facade rouge," The Red Cottage," with the description, "The rustic cottage of the fields is glaring in the sun. The farmer labours in his field."

The lot is accompanied by an earlier letter from Vidar Poulsson, dated "Oslo, the 11th of April, 1987" with some initial comments on the painting.

Estimate $20,000-40,000
