N.B. The present work depicts a scene in Connemara in the West of Ireland and is dated c. 1921-2 on stylistic grounds. The Bog Pool is numbered 1264 in S. B. Kennedy's ongoing cataloguing of Paul Henry's oeuvre. We wish to thank Dr. S.B. Kennedy for his kind assistance with cataloguing the lot.

Beginning in the mid-1910s, Henry moved away from the influence of Jean-François Millet toward that of James A.M. Whistler, favoring pure landscape and atmosphere over depictions of the heroic figure. (1) Compositionally, the present landscape is characteristic of his "two-part division of the picture-plane dominated by the ponderously clouded sky..." (2)
