William Hogarth (British, 1697-1764)

Two Unframed Portrait Engravings of Hogarth:Portrait of Hogarth with his Dog Trump and Hogarth Painting the Comic Muse.
Trump signed and inscribed within the image "The LINE of BEAUTY/And GRACE/HW 1745" l.l., and "Painted by W. Hogarth." l.l. and "Engraved by Benj Smith." l.r., both below the image; Muse inscribed and dated "William Hogarth. 1764" l.c. and "Comedy/1764" c.r., both within the plate (posthumous editions). Plate sizes to 15 7/8 x 14 in., sheet sizes to 25 1/8 x 19 1/4 in.
Condition: Both with foxing, creasing, nicks, wear, toning, and small tears to edges, sheets each with one irregular edge.

N.B. Described as a "manifesto portrait," Portrait of Hogarth with his Dog Trump depicts the line of beauty on the artist's palette, leather-bound books by Shakespeare, Milton, and Swift, and Hogarth's pug, Trump. Hogarth Painting the Comic Muse celebrates the artist's appointment as Sergeant Painter to George II.
Estimate $200-400

Largest tear appears on Muse, l.l. edge, measuring 1 1/4 in. Trump with crease at l.l. corner, approximately 8 in. across the diagonal. None of these issues affects the images.
