Description:
Jade Mountain, China, Ch'ien Lung mark (1735-1796) and period , large pebble shape, carved as a mountain landscape with deer and pine trees, the reverse with cranes and ling chih, stone of a pale greenish white color with considerable areas of russet, element of an early stand remaining, 7 x 3 1/2 in.
On the side carved with deer, inscription reads:
"The stone is broken and celadon jade appears,
It transforms into twin deer in precipitous outcrops,
One could not tell mountains from pines,
Rain and wind reigns half of the river,
The other half light and fire."

On the side carved with cranes, inscription reads:
"Out there in the mountainous ranges one finds peace and solitude in the creeks,
To appreciate clear water one first appreciates snowy feathers,
Remember the brilliant verses of Hanlin,
Only for the cranes and no better than that."
