Valley Scene
Signed "D.J. Gue" l.l., inscribed "...Phila 1887" on the stretcher.
Oil on canvas en grisaille, 16 x 24 in. (45.7 x 61.0 cm), framed.
Condition: Mild surface grime.
Estimate $800-1,200

Subtle craquelure. Areas of very subtle retouch scattered in the sky and in the mountain on the left side. The largest spot measures 1/4 inch diameter and is located 6 1/2 inches up from the bottom edge and 3 1/2 inches in from the left. This spot is more noticeable because of its mat surface. There is a small (1/2 in. long overall) curved line of retouch located in the center top of the foreground tree on the left. There are about a dozen very small dots of retouch clustered in the u.r. quadrant in the sky. Staining to the reverse of the canvas.
