Description:
Commodore Barclay's Wardroom Sign, early 19th century, green painted canvas with line decoration and black trim reading Brit (h) Ship Queen Charlote. Commodore Barclay Lake Erie, lg. 11 3/4, ht. 7 in.
According to notations by Keith Wilbur, this sign was removed by a U.S. sailor before the HMS Queen Charlotte sank. It is likely that she was the 16-gun sloop captured by the U.S. on October 13, 1813 following the Battle of Lake Erie.
Estimate $600-800
Canvas slightly bowed due to shrinkage, backside in green paint with black banding and gilt lining, gilt inscription darkened with age.
