Zedekiah Belknap (American, 1781-1858)

Portrait of a Sister and Brother. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, c. 1835, 27 x 34 1/2 in., unframed. Condition: Relined, restoration.

Provenance: The consignor purchased this painting from a woman with the married name of Black. It was thought that the children were members of the Black or Cheevers family of Newburyport, Massachusetts, or the Pinder family of Ipswich, Massachusetts.

Estimate $15,000-25,000

Numerous scattered spots of retouch to children's faces, clothing and background. Before the recent restoration,a third child who had passed away was originally painted at the center and was painted over sometime ago.
