Anglo School, 18th Century

Portrait of a Gentleman. Unsigned, the subject possibly Prince Charles Edward Stuart (1720-1788). Oil on canvas, 19 3/4 x 16 in., in a later molded wood frame. Condition: Relined, scattered retouch to craquelure.
Estimate $800-1,200

Family tradition passed down through several generations related that this portrait was of Prince Charles Edward Stewart. Research on the portrait in 1962 by the Fogg Art Museum, the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art , and the Frick Art Reference Library, determined that this portrait was not of Prince Charles Edward Stewart.
