N.B. Henry Raschen was born in Germany and, in 1868, moved with his family to Fort Ross, California. Raschen soon settled in San Francisco and began to study art with Charles Nahl and Virgil Williams. He traveled to Munich in the late 1870s where he studied alongside fellow American expatriates such as William Merritt Chase. Raschen returned to San Francisco and began to paint scenes of American Indians. His life-like compositions conveyed the customs of the Native American tribes throughout California and the Southwest, particularly the Pomo Indians of nearby Sonoma County. Although he returned to Munich for four years (from 1890 until 1894),Raschen ultimately settled in California, where he continued to produce the paintings of Native Americans for which he best known.
