Landscape with Cows at Pasture/An Impressionist Scene
Signed "BRECK" l.l., a canvas stencil from Paul Foinet, Paris, on the reverse and
inscribed "owned by Mrs. J. F. Curtis..." in pencil on the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 18 1/8 x 22 in. (46.0 x 55.9 cm),unframed.
Condition: Tear in the l.l. and u.r. quadrants, surface grime, subtle canvas deformations, losses to tacking margin.

Provenance: Through an Allston, Massachusetts estate.

N. B. John Leslie Breck, born of German descent, studied in Munich in the early 1880s, continued his practice at the Académie Julian in Paris in the mid-1880s, and painted in Giverny the summer of 1887. It was at Giverny that Breck became acquainted with Claude Monet and his family, and the present work shows the dappled light effects that Breck mastered under Monet's influence.



Estimate $20,000-30,000

The tear in the lower left quadrant is in the shape of an upside-down "T" and measures approx.1 1/4 in. in length. There is a small tear/puncture in the upper right quadrant is approx. 1/2 in. in length. There is some losses/tears to the tacking margin and mild wear to edges. Canvas deformations are mild. The work might benefit from a gentle cleaning.
