Anglo-American School, 19th Century

The Tottenhamin Rough Waters. Unsigned, with indistinct penciled inscriptions identifying ship as the Tottenham and artist as Henry Gregory on the reverse. Oil on board depicting the ship flying a British flag and what looks like a gun firing off the starboard side and dark clouds parting overhead, 13 1/2 x 20 in., in a molded giltwood frame. Condition: Panel cracked in two places with reinforcements on the reverse, scattered retouch to sky area.

Note: Oral history relates that Henry Gregory was fourth officer on board the Tottenham, and that after the war of 1812, settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. Accompanying the lot is Henry Gregory's "Certificate of Naturalization" paper dated December 13, 1826, when he was thirty-five years old, and stating he was born in Dublin, Ireland and emigrated in 1816. The papers were hand-written in Hamilton County, Ohio. A pencil inscription on the reverse reads "Keepsake for J.S. Carvile/Henry Gregory landed in N.Y. May 16, 1916 (incorrect),one year after his sweetheart Sarah Byrne arrived with her parents the James W.Byrnes Sr.," also included is a marble paint palette.
