Description:

American School, 19th Century

"Resting for the night." Unsigned, titled below, inscription on right edge reads "an original sketch by the author." Watercolor on paper, 10 x 14 in., in a gilt gesso frame. Condition: Laid down onto cardboard, light toning.

Provenance: The Estate of Sir Edwin A.G. Manton.
Estimate $300-500

The paper the painting was executed on has been applied to cardboard. There is overall very minor toning due to previous acidic backing. It looks like there might be a repaired tear at left edge about halfway down and angeled toward upper center about 2 in. long. It is not glaring , only noticeable under very close inspection.
