Pictorial Darned White Netting Lace Bedspread, possibly Louisiana, early 19th century, executed in white silk threads on white netting edged with crocheted linen lace border, with a large oval at center depicting a large eagle perched on a leafy branch surrounded by small motifs of birds, busts of George Washington and James Madison, soldier, steamboat, sailing vessel, animals and eagle and shield; the central design encircled by eight oval reserves with assorted motifs including a lady and her dog, a stagecoach, an eagle over a horse and groom, two figures and a monument, an eagle over a lady in a small sailboat, a steamboat, a house and tree, and an auction scene under the inscription "Vendue this day," (public auction this day), each reserve enclosed in a leafy border, the whole surrounded with a wide floral border, (tears and small losses), approx. 100 x 78 in.
Two corners with tears and losses, other corners repaired as well as several fairly unobtrusive small tears and repairs around the edges, scattered small holes in the netting. White netting ground is machine made.
