American School, 19th Century

Portrait of a Gentleman Standing Before Niagara Falls. Signed and dated "C.Peters" and "Dec. 1835" in rockery u.l. and c.r. Watercolor on paper, with sentimental French inscriptions in ink inscribed on the rocks in the foreground, sight size 14 1/2 x 19 in., in an eglomise mat and period molded giltwood frame. Condition: Minor toning, not examined out of frame.

Provenance: Ex Howard and Jean Lipman collecton, sold at Sotheby's, The Howard and Jean Lipman Collection of Important American Folk Art & Painted Furniture, November 14, 1981, lot 46.
