N.B. Crite was an African-American Bostonian artist who was known for painting everyday scenes in Roxbury and South End neighborhoods. Crite considered his role as an artist to be "a story teller of the drama of man. This is my small contribution--to tell the African-American experience--in a local sense, of the neighborhood, and in a larger sense, of its part in the total human experience." (1)

Crite studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in the 1930s, and graduated with a bachelor's degree from Harvard University Extension in 1968. His works are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian Institution, the Fogg Art Museum, and the Addison Gallery of American Art, among others.
