N.B. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Gerrit Beneker first traveled to Massachusetts in 1912 to study with Charles Hawthorne in Provincetown. Over the following years, Beneker enjoyed a successful career which took him throughout the country; he worked as an illustrator in New York, produced a series of posters for the U.S. Navy in Washington, D.C., and was an artist-in-residence at the Hydraulic Pressed Steel Co. in Cleveland, Ohio. Beneker, however, was always attracted to the coastline of Massachusetts¹ Cape. He returned for summers, and in 1920 purchased a home in Truro. He was also a founding member of the Provincetown Art Association.
