N.B. Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Pope was an active member of the Boston Art Club, best known for his trompe l¹oeil still lifes and depictions of animals. He was largely self taught, but studied briefly with Boston artist Walter Rimmer. As a child, Pope worked along side his father at a lumber yard where he first began to make wood carvings of animals, and his early work consisted largely of wood carvings of game. From the 1880s, however, he abandoned sculptural work in favor of painting. His early compositions primarily featured animals, his later works incorporated figures.
