U.S. Hospital Department Amputation Set by Kolbe, including four Liston knives with cross-hatched ebony handles, trephine handle (no trephine),bone forceps and reflex hammer with hatched steel handles, ebony-handled bow saw and Hey saw, in velvet-lined fitted mahogany case with two trays, brass banding, lid escutcheon engraved U.S.A. Hospl. Dept. and maker's label D.W. Kolbe, Manufacturer of Surgical & Orthopaedical Instruments, 32 & 34 South Ninth Street, Philadelphia, PA., 17 in., (missing multiple instruments, case finish stripped and missing some banding).

Note: Surgical sets by makers including Kolbe were purchased by the government for use by Union surgeons in the American Civil War.
