American School, 19th Century

Portrait of Young Harry Herbert Keith (1851-1925) of Newton, Massachusetts. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, c. 1855, 46 x 32 1/2 in., in a later molded giltwood frame. Condition: Three patch-repaired tears with associated retouch.

Note: Harry Herbert Keith was the son of William Ward Keith and Cordelia Bryant Keith. Harry married Louise Jackson, who was related to the Jacksons, who were among the first families to settle in Newton, Massachusetts. Harry, Louisa, and their two children lived at the Jackson Homestead, now the location of the Newton History Museum, Newton, Massachusetts, and is the headquarters of the Newton Historical Society. Accompanying the portrait are two small daguerreotypes, one depicting William as a baby with his mother Cordelia Bryant Keith, the other showing Harry standing and wearing the plaid dress he is wearing in the portrait offered here.
Estimate $3,000-5,000

The fairly unobtrusive repaired tears are: about 1 in. on chest atneckline of dress, about 1 1/2 at c.l. background, and about 4 1.2 in. lg lower rt. edge of dress hem into rock area. Also there are a few small background surface scratches.
