American School, 19th Century

Portrait of Oliver C. Coffin, Seven Years Old. Unsigned, sitter identified in an ink inscription on the stretcher. Oil on canvas, c. 1830, 24 1/2 x 19 3/4 in., in a period molded giltwood frame. Condition: Relined, scattered retouch.

Note: The Barney Genealogical Record at the Nantucket Historical Association lists Oliver Cromwell Coffin as the second child born to Barnabus and Mary (Starbuck) Coffin of Nantucket, Massachusetts. He was born on March 4, 1823, married Sarah Nickerson in 1851, and together they had one son, Walter Scott Coffin (b. 1852). Oliver was lost at sea in 1857.
