N.B. John Whorf's watercolor landscapes capture the light and color of his native Massachusetts. He was born in the town of Winthrop, Massachusetts, but is best known for his Boston cityscapes and Provincetown coastal views. Whorf studied at the St. Botolph Studio in Boston and the Boston Museum School. By 1917-1918, Whorf traveled to Provincetown where he studied with Charles W. Hawthorne. The coastal views of Provincetown became a favorite subject for Whorf. Influenced by Hawthorne's use of color, the vibrancy and bright hues of the Cape town offered an endless source of inspiration and Whorf soon assimilated into the burgeoning artist's community there. He adopted other elements of Hawthorne's style, namely blending varying levels of translucency and alternating light washes with opaque strokes to convey a sense of light and shadow. By 1937 Whorf settled in Provincetown permanently, where he continued to paint for the remainder of his career.
