N.B. In 1860, Maine artist George F. Morse founded an artist's group called "The Brushians," who produced landscape paintings of the Portland, South Portland, and Cape Elizabeth areas. Morse however, left the harsh New England weather in the wintertime to live in Crescent City, Florida.
In the winter of 1894-95, Florida suffered the worst freeze in the history of the state to date. Again, in 1899, there was another freeze. By 1902, the state's agriculture was recovering and young groves such as the one depicted here were reappearing.
