N.B. Edward Lamson Henry painted highly detailed genre scenes which are both nostalgic and clearly narrative. He was born in South Carolina and studied with W.M. Oddie in New York and then at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In 1860, Henry moved to Paris where he attended the Beaux-Arts Academie and studied with Joseph Nicolas Robert-Fleury and Marc-Gabriel-Charles Gleyre. He returned to the U.S. and turned his attention to painting scenes from the Civil War. Henry made two more trips abroad, in 1871 and 1875.
