N.B. John Frederick Herring is best known for his sporting scenes and depictions of animals. Born in London, Herring moved north to Doncaster in 1814 where he first worked painting insignia on the sides of coaches and inn signs. A self-taught artist, he first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1818. Throughout his career, Herring moved from Suffolk back to his native London, and then to Paris, before ultimately settling in Meopham Park near Tonbridge. It was there that he focused on painting narrative scenes of country life.
