"William & Mary" Slip-decorated Redware Plate, attributed to the Smith Pottery, Norwalk, Connecticut, 1825-1850, round plate with coggled rim, yellow slip-trailed inscription, dia. 11 1/8 in.

Literature: See Slipped and Glazed: Regional American Redware, the Trustees of Heritage Plantation of Sandwich, Sandwich, Massachusetts, curated by Brian Cullity, 1991, p. 44, plate III, and cover, for similarly decorated plates attributed to the Smith Pottery of Norwalk, Connecticut, with Henry Chinchester's distinctive Spenserian script.

slip is in very good condition, 1/2 in. dia. shallow surface chip, few small rim chips.
