Pair of Thomas Jeckyll Attributed Sunflower Andirons
Brass and iron
1878-84
Stylized head with dual layers of petals on solid stem with four falling leaves and buds, ball-form base with sunflower relief decoration on footed support and scroll-form rest, ht. 32 5/8, approx. wd. 11 1/2, approx. dp. 19 in.

These andirons are of significant importance, although attributed the earliest examples are made with brass flowers and iron based leaves. A similar example can be seen in the 1884 catalogue of Barnard, Bishop and Barnards. Jeckyll did not appear to sign his andirons but Barnard did mark with a 3b. A pair is on display in the Peacock room at the Smithsonian, The peacock room: a cultural biography, Linda Merrill, Yale University Press, 1998. A pair sold at Christies October 26, 2006 for 90,000 gbp.Condition: Repairs where the leaves meet brass stem, one leaf the solder has broken,this leaf is a thicker casting than all leaves, believed to be a replacement, a bud may also be replaced, the back is brass and the dogs are iron.
