Description:

Northwest Coast Argillite Carving, Haida, c. second half 19th century, the rectangular form with rounded corners, carved on one side in high relief, a stylized bird on one end and a crab on the other, (broken into two pieces), lg. 9, wd. 5 1/2 in.

Provenance: Collected by Frederick Schwatka (1849-1892), M.D., Arctic explorer and cavalry officer, (biography included with lot).
