Artist-designed 18kt Gold Necklace, Hans Richter, Gem Montebello, Untitled, c.1967, composed of red and white tinted gold "winding" elements completed by rectangular trace link chain, lg. 14 1/2 in., numbered 7 of edition of 9, signed in script by artist.
Note: Richter was a German-born Expressionist artist, a member of the Blaue Reiter group, and one of the original founders of the Dada movement. A wounded war veteran, he was an outspoken a critic of militarist Germany, for which he was briefly jailed. Later a filmmaker in America, Richter is known for 8x8: A Chess Sonata, a collaboration with Max Ernst, Jean Cocteau, Alexander Calder and Marcel Duchamp partly filmed on the lawn at the artist's Connecticut summer house.
A necklace of this design was exhibited in Jewelry as Sculpture as Jewelry, Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, 1973.
