N.B. Working with a wide range of subjects that included both landscape and still life painting, Jane Peterson developed her own unique style. The works are marked by bold colors, vivid brushworks and often incorporated elements of Fauvism and Impressionism. During World Wars I and II, Peterson turned her efforts to American causes. She painted war-related subjects and often sold or exhibited to benefit organizations such as Liberty Loans or the Red Cross. Joseph writes, "In 1944 she was chosen to paint a representative portrait of a WAVE, a WAC, a SPAR, and a woman Marine. At a patriotic rally, these paintings were auctioned by Acting Mayor of New York Newbold Morris for $211,000 in War Bonds to Mrs. Lytel Hull, who then contributed them as a permanent War Memorial to the New York City Center of Music and Drama."
