N.B. Pennsylvania artist George William Sotter was part the New Hope School of American Impressionists. Born in Pittsburgh, Sotter first began painting his surroundings, including the rivers and buildings of his hometown. He first studied with New Hope School painter Edward W. Redfield, and then later with William Merritt Chase, Thomas Anshutz, and Henry G. Keller. He also attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Sotter set up a studio in his barn in Holicong, Pennsylvania, near Bucks County. He frequently painted dramatic landscapes filled with enormous clouds in which the skies transport the viewer into the scene, instantly conveying weather conditions and time of day.

Estimate $30,000-50,000

The retouch is scattered dots and dashes with two small areas, one u.l. (to the left of the tree branches) and one l.r. (in the cloud, just above the horizon line). The abrasions are extremely mild and unobtrusive. The work might possibly benefit from a gentle cleaning.
