Bashka Paeff, (Russian-American, 1893-1979) Bronze Figure of a Seated Hound, possibly depicting a whippet, on elongated rectangular base, with incised signature and date 1919, ht. 15 1/4, base 18 1/2 x 6 1/4 in.
Note: Bashka Paeff was born in Russia, and emigrated to the United States as a child. Schooled in Boston, Paeff's works include portraits, bas-reliefs and commemorative sculptures; a fountain figure of a boy with bird is featured at the Arlington Street entrance to the Boston Public Garden. Animal figures were also a popular subject, and include a portrait of President Warren G. Harding's Airedale, Laddie Boy, in the Smithsonian collection.
