N.B. Robert Scott Duncanson, one of the foremost African-American artists in 19th century America, is best known for his romantic landscapes that reflect the Hudson River School aesthetic. Born to an African-American mother and Scottish-Canadian father, Duncanson traveled extensively within the U.S. and abroad; he traveled to Glasgow to study in 1853 and later moved to Canada. He was largely self-taught and began his career as a portraitist, creating images of Abolitionists. Duncanson's images of untainted natural environments contain elements of exoticism and escapism which are a clear commentary on America's socio-political climate and tumultuous race relations.
Estimate $50,000-75,000
