Incised signature "Palmer Hayden" l.l., artist and title inscribed in the artist's
hand on the reverse.
Oil on canvas, 16 x 20 in. (40.6 x 50.8 cm),framed.
Condition: Scattered retouch, varnish inconsistencies, craquelure with cupping, surface grime.

N.B. Hayden grew up in Virginia, but moved to New York in the early 1920s. He studied at the Cooper Union Art School, and quickly became a leading figure in the Harlem Renaissance. His works depicted a broad variety of subjects, both urban and rural. In 1926, he won a gold medal from the Harmon Foundation for his painting titled The Schooners. Founded by William Harmon, the Harmon Foundation was one of the first organizations to nationally promote works created by African American artists.
