Condition: Good.
Provenance: Purchased from the artist in the early 1900s then by descent to the present owners.
N.B. Best known for his winter night scenes, George William Sotter belongs to the New Hope School of American Impressionists. Born in Pittsburgh, Sotter moved to Holicong, Pennsylvania near Bucks County where he set up a studio in his barn. He first studied with New Hope School painter, Edward W. Redfield, and then later with William Merritt Chase, Thomas Anshutz, and Henry G. Keller. In 1907, he married artist Alice Bennet and the couple took an extended trip to Europe to paint. In addition to his painting, Sotter taught at the Carnegie Institute of Technology and designed stained glass windows.
