N.B. Native Hawaiian artist David Howard Hitchcock was born in Hilo in 1861. His earliest formal training was under Jules Tavernier, who traveled to Hilo in 1885 with fellow landscape painter Joseph Strong. Hitchcock joined the two artists on a sketching expedition to Kilauea volcano, where Hitchcock was inspired by the forms and varied light qualities of volcanoes.

Tavernier became Hitchcock's life-long mentor and encouraged him to pursue formal training, both in California and Paris. After his academic training Hitchcock returned to Hawaii, and continued painting the islands' unique geological features. In fact, Hitchcock and Tavernier were part of a small group of Hawaiian artists that were locally known to as the "Volcano School."
Estimate $10,000-15,000

Retouch is most likely pigment fluorescence. Scattered craquelure is stable and unobtrusive. The piece may benefit from a gentle cleaning.
