Collection of Transfer-decorated Alphabet Children's Mugs in a Pine Cupboard, England and America, 19th century, twenty-seven Staffordshire pottery children's mugs ornamented with the letters of the alphabet, genre scenes, and verses, several highlighted with polychrome enamel, displayed in an early 20th century pine cupboard with twenty-eight compartments, (minor imperfections),mug ht. 2 1/4-3, cupboard ht. 17 3/8, wd. 30 1/2, dp. 8 1/2 in.
Provenance: Some of the mugs are from the collection of Richard Dennis, publisher of Gifts for Good Children: The History of Children's China 1790-1890, by Noel Riley, Somerset, 1991.
