Description:

Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen (American/Danish, 1850-1921)

Portrait of the Joy Line Steamship LARCHMONT. Signed and dated "A. Jacobsen 1902 31 PALISADE AV West Hoboken, NJ 1904" l.r., the vessel identified on the bow, paddlewheel, and pennant. Oil on canvas, 22 x 36 in., in a later gold painted wood frame. Condition: Relined, minor retouch to u.c. sky.

Note: The paddle wheel steamship Larchmont was built in 1885 in Bath, Maine. She was originally named the Cumberland. In 1902 she was purchased by the Joy Steamship Line and renamed Larchmont. On February 11, 1907, the Larchmont left Providence, Rhode Island, en route to New York. A winter storm struck that caused high seas and reduced visibility, and the Larchmont and coal schooner Harry P. Knowlton collided. The Larchmont went down within 20 minutes, resulting in the death of about 150 passengers.
