Deacon Robert Peckham (1785-1877)

Portrait of Frances Adelia Chaffin (1848-1851). Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 26 3/4 x 21 1/4 in. Condition: Laid down on Masonite; scattered inpainting.

Provenance: Frances Adelia Chaffin (b. 1848) was the daughter of Laura Ann Adams (1826-1897), pictured in the preceding Peckham portrait in a yellow dress standing next to the cradle with John Quincy Adams. Laura Ann married John Emerson Chaffin (b. 1825) from Holden, Massachusetts, on December 31, 1846, in Bolton, Massachusetts, where they both lived. Subsequently the Chaffins lived in Cohasset and Holden, Massachusetts, and finally Detroit. The consignor is Frances Adelia Chaffin's great, great granddaughter.
