Printed "JACKSON, Photo...DENVER" l.r., title inscribed on the reverse.
Albumen print mounted on board, image size 22 x 17 in. (55.9 x 43.2 cm),unframed.
Condition: Water damage, staining, foxing, tear c.l., abrasions, board warped, surface grime.
N.B. Over the course of his nearly 80-year career, Jackson established himself as an artist, illustrator, and one of the most important photographers of the American West. Jackson began his career as a photographic retoucher in Vermont before serving in the 12th Vermont Infantry for the Union Army during the American Civil War. After his service, Jackson traveled to California by wagon then moved to Omaha, where he set up a photography studio. In 1870 he was assigned official photographer for the U.S. Geological and Geographical Survey of Ferdinand V. Hayden. Traveling with artists Thomas Moran and William H. Holmes, he took photographs of the Yellowstone region.
