American School, 19th Century
The Dobson Home in Virginia. Unsigned. Graphite and charcoal on paper, 21 1/4 x 27 in., in an ornate silver gessoed wood frame. Condition: Minor toning.
Note: A note once affixed to the frame is inscribed: Dobson's home in Goochland county, Virginia. A party of southern (Confederate) officers met there one night & the Aurora Borealis appeared. ?? negro servants were superstitious & ---- watching & found northern officers coming in to arrest the southern officers. The negro servants notified the southern officer & the southern officers fled.
