William Russel Birch (Anglo/American, 1755-1834)

Portait of Mr. Reed Williams. Signed "Wm. Birch P.t" l.c. Subject identified in inscription on the reverse. Watercolor, graphite and ink on paper, c. 1820, 4 7/8 x 3 7/8 (sight),in a molded gilt and black painted wood frame with gilt gesso rosettes at the corners. Condition: Very good , minor toning.

Note: William Birch immigrated to the United States from England in 1794, settled in Philadelphia and created a series of engraved views of the city titled The City of Philadelphia as It Appears in the Year 1800, the first series of its kind published in the United States. He is also known for his portraits and miniatures.
