American School, early 19th Century

Portrait of a Young Boy with a Whip and a Pull Toy. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, c. 1840, depicting the boy wearing a gray dress, with white zig-zag trim, white pantalets, red and white patterned stockings, and black shoes, standing on a fancifully painted patterned floor, 27 x 20 in., unframed. Condition: Lacks stretcher, several areas of residual paper at upper center and lower quarter, small scattered creases with paint losses.

Note: This painting was found many years ago in Somerville, Massachusetts, framed under a map. the reverse has been painted with a scene of a Greek revival meeting house.
